Hi Graham, They were both and, IIRC , they were grey upper and black lower when I was based on Wessex squadrons in the 70's however it could be the opposite way round!

Yellow tips I have photos I took when I made her the subject of my first Wessex conversion last year Having grey as an option thows the colour question out into the arena doesn't it? Dark Green uppers has been the conventional answer for years It's a shame that Mike's picture is very clearly black undersides but the few uppers are as dusty as buggery and the colour is vague. Posted September 2, The ' SAR Blade' was fitted to all SAR cabs both RN and Crab to aid visual detection by other aircraft and cliff rescue guys, some Wessex blades also had Beta lights fitted to the tip caps to show the tip path at night, very striking when flying in formation at night, the rotor and small strip beta lights on the airframe pre NVG days :mental: The SAR Blade was 'only' painted on the upper surface to replace the green paintwork with the cradle stripes being black.
